5 Ways to Save Energy in an Apartment

Living in an apartment comes with its own set of challenges when it comes to managing energy usage and keeping utility bills in check. You don’t often get the final say in what appliances are selected, and you might even have to fight a roommate or two when it comes to what temperature to keep your apartment.

However, with a few simple adjustments and mindful habits, you can effectively reduce your energy consumption and save money on your electric bill. Here are five practical ways to save energy in an apartment:

Upgrade to Energy-Efficient Appliances

Where you can, invest in energy-efficient appliances. We understand that not everyone is able to do this, but if your landlord is able to negotiate, see if they’d be willing to upgrade inefficient refrigerators, dishwashers, and washing machines. (And again, landlords, you’ll save money in the long run AND have appliances that can make your property far more attractive than outdated ones!)

Look for the ENERGY STAR label, which indicates that the appliance meets strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. While initial costs may be higher, energy-efficient appliances consume less electricity over time, leading to significant savings on your energy bills.

Seal Leaks and Insulate

Keep your apartment well-insulated and free of drafts to prevent energy loss. Seal gaps around windows and doors with weather stripping or caulking to reduce air leakage. Consider using draft stoppers for doors and window insulation film to further improve insulation — especially if your landlord or rental company isn’t responsive to requests. Proper insulation helps maintain a comfortable indoor temperature, reducing the need for heating and cooling, and ultimately saving energy.

Use Energy-Efficient Lighting

This is a relatively easy renter fix! Replace traditional incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient LED or CFL bulbs throughout your apartment. LED bulbs use up to 75% less energy and last much longer than incandescent bulbs, making them a cost-effective lighting solution. You can also consider installing motion sensors or timers to automatically turn off lights when they’re not in use, further reducing energy waste.

Practice Smart Heating and Cooling

Take advantage of programmable thermostats to regulate your apartment’s temperature based on your schedule. Set the thermostat to lower temperatures in the winter while you’re asleep or away, and raise it during the summer to reduce cooling costs. Use ceiling fans to circulate air more efficiently and supplement your HVAC system. Additionally, keep vents and radiators unobstructed to ensure proper airflow.

Unplug Electronics When Not in Use

Many electronic devices continue to draw power even when they’re turned off or in standby mode, contributing to “phantom” energy consumption. Unplug chargers, appliances, and electronics when they’re not in use to eliminate standby power consumption. Consider using power strips with built-in switches to easily turn off multiple devices at once, especially those in entertainment centers or home offices.
