Understanding the Importance of Weatherstripping

You may have heard about how much energy you can save by weatherstripping your home. So, what exactly is weatherstripping? Does your home require it even if it is new? Pronto Power has those answers and more!

What is weatherstripping?

Between almost every door or window and its facing is a space large enough for air to seep through. Weatherstripping stops air from leaking in or out using felt, foam, metal, rubber, or vinyl. When applied to the frame of the window or the door, it can help you save up to 10% on your energy costs.

Types of Weatherstripping

While most homes need weatherstripping, the types of weatherstripping are quite varied. Depending on what your needs are, the type of weatherstripping will change. Below are a few of the most-used examples.

Tension seal (V-channel, V-strip)
Self-adhering, this strip is plastic and includes a springy metal v-shaped strip. Place it between a window and its frame or at the top or sides of a door. Because these are nailed into place with penny nails, they may prove somewhat difficult to install, but tension seals work extremely effectively, especially on older homes. In fact, older homes might use metal tension seals simply because a more modern-looking rubber or vinyl would appear out of place.

Weatherstripping tape
These rubber strips are very inexpensive and simple to install with adhesive siding. Use on tops and bottoms of windows and tops of doors.

Reinforced foam
Install using staples for better results. These can simply be adhered on windows and doors along tops. It insulates very well, but does not last a long time on windows and doors that are used frequently.

Door sweep
Attach to the bottoms of doors to reduce airflow at floor level. These come in a variety of materials, from felt to metal. Door sweeps are expensive but simple to install. Use a bulb threshold or a door shoe for a cleaner look. Bulb thresholds also have the advantage of deterring water from entering when installed on an exterior door.

Fin seal
Specifically designed for sliding aluminum windows and doors, these are expensive, but extremely effective.

Interlocking metal weatherstripping
This type of weatherstripping is expensive and should be installed by professionals because the interlocking panels must be properly aligned. The interlocking metal panels provide extremely effective weather protection.

Weatherstripping tips

Choose weatherstripping that can withstand constant friction if you are liable to open and close the doors and windows where it is installed. If your windows are opened infrequently during winter, it may be advantageous to invest in a less expensive weatherstripping since it is unlikely to wear as quickly.

Regardless of the type of weatherstripping you apply, ensure your surface is dry and clean before you begin.

Remember, weatherstripping can include more than exterior doors and windows. Consider the door to your attic space, around window air conditioners, and at any other areas where air is liable to leak in and out.
