Doing the laundry takes up a significant amount of energy, but it doesn’t have to have a big impact on your electric bill! There are many steps you can take to get your laundry done more efficiently. Here are a few:
Wash Full Loads
Every time you start up the washing machine, it will use the same amount of energy. Keep this in mind when planning out laundry days. You want to fill — but not overfill — your washing machine every time you use it. Be cautious of overfilling your washer as this can lead to mechanical issues or imbalances.
Use Cold Water
Most of the energy used by washing machines is used for heating up water, up to 90% according to Consumer Reports. Unless a label specifies a different water temperature, cold water is the way to go.
In fact, most detergents are designed for using cold water, and avoiding hot water helps with things like color fade. Hot water can help kill bacteria in towels and sheets, but for everything else, cold water works just fine.
You can also get detergents to help with your energy conservation! Some detergents and bleaches are formulated to be optimal in cold water, helping you save money in the long run.
Remove Dryer Lint
Every time you use your dryer, lint builds up and is collected in a lint screen. These are easy to remove, and doing so can make your dryer more efficient.
When you clean the lint from the lint screen, you reduce the risk of fires and improve air circulation within the dryer.
You should remove any dryer lint after each load of laundry. Once a month, scrub the filter with a brush to make sure you get any lint that’s stuck inside.
Deep Clean the Dryer
This isn’t quite as simple as removing dryer lint from the lint screen, but it’s just as important for keeping your dryer running safely and efficiently.
Start by making sure to fully remove everything that’s in the dryer every time you use it. Once a year, vacuum out the vents and air hose coming out of your dryer to remove any debris or moisture.
Replace Your Washer
Older washing machines simply don’t run as efficiently as newer ones. An eco-friendly Green Choice washing machine will provide increased performance all while using less water and less electricity.
This is a step we would recommend taking if all of these other steps don’t significantly decrease your energy usage.
