6 Energy Savings Tips for Fanatics Only

How far will you go to save energy?

Will you buy a highly efficient AAA-battery-powered LED flashlight you turn on at night so you don’t have to turn on the lights?

Yep. We’re not joking. These tips are crazy. They’re doable. They’re extreme. And a few mixed nuts around the country actually do these things.

You shouldn’t feel guilty or ashamed for not doing them. But they can save energy. And who knows, if you do them just a little bit, you might find yourself having some fun!

So here’s some not-so-sane energy savings tips you might use:

1. Install Motion-Sensored Lights…Inside Your Home

Only want your lights on when you need them? Hate the fact that other family members forget to turn off the lights when not in use?

Well, with motion-sensor operated lights in your home, they’ll join you in saving energy whether they like it or not.

2. Put Your Dryer Where You Can’t Reach It

With stackable washing machines and dryers, you can effectively cut off your ability to dry your clothes…permanently!

Put your dryer up high. Find another way to dry your clothes…like your outdoor clothesline, heat registers, or basement.

3. Force Your Kids to Play Outside

You don’t have to ban digital screens entirely. They do hold kids’ (and adults’ for that matter) attention like nothing else. And they’re totally appropriate to use (to an extent).

But, draw firm boundaries around technology and digital screens.

Make your kids go outside. Create a scheduled family time. Not only will you save energy, but you’ll improve your children’s (and your own) emotional quality of life.

You just can’t put a price on that.

4. Reward Family Members for Energy-Saving Behavior

Track the energy usage of everyone in your home, and assign them points based on how much they use.

The person with the least number of points at the end of the week gets to choose the family activity on Sunday.

5. Bubble-Wrap Your Windows

Yep. Your neighbors will find you certifiably nuts with this one.

But maybe they already think that and you don’t care.

Bubble wrap keeps the cold out and the heat in. And you can purchase it cheaply online.

6. Exercise When You’re Cold

Cold at home? Don’t raise the furnace’s temperature! Instead, do 25 push-ups or sit-ups. Not only do you save energy, but you’ll find yourself in better shape too.

So yeah, some of those are crazier than others. And depending on how you live your life, some may sound completely insane.

But, like we said, these tips are for fanatics only!
