Some people are well-intended and simply make a mistake in how they understand and communicate. Others want so badly to prove their point of view that they\u2019ll say anything.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, read these myths so you understand the reality and truly experience energy (and financial) savings:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Scheduling an Annual Furnace Tune-Up Saves You Energy<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you\u2019re looking at the functionality of your furnace and the life of the parts, scheduling a tune-up makes 100% sense. It absolutely does that.<\/p>\n<p>However, there\u2019s no evidence that this actually saves you energy, says Martin Holladay, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenbuildingadvisor.com\/blogs\/dept\/musings\/stupid-energy-saving-tips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">author at Green Building Advisor<\/a>. Now, you might hear this from various contractors.<\/p>\n<p>And there is potential that tuning up your furnace could save you energy. But there\u2019s no guarantee.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Caulking and Weatherstripping Your Windows<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Doing this actually does save you energy. However, the benefits get exaggerated. The biggest leaks come from your attic and basement.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure you have your attic door and the rim joist around your basement sealed. You can caulk and weatherstrip your windows also, but just don\u2019t make it your top priority or expect great savings to follow.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Installing Foam Gaskets in Your Electrical Outlets<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Gaskets actually don\u2019t do much to truly prevent air leakage. That\u2019s because they block air from flowing through the cover, which as you might expect, doesn\u2019t happen to a great degree.<\/p>\n<p>If your outlet cover doesn\u2019t fit snugly against the wall, they help. But they don\u2019t do anything about the holes or switches in the receptacles.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Halogen Light Bulbs are Super Efficient<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you\u2019ve heard this, regard it as dated information. Halogens are more efficient than incandescent bulbs, which was 100% true years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Now, however, you have CFLs and LEDs, which blow away the efficiency of halogen bulbs. Plus, the price of LEDs is coming down rapidly, which justifies getting them all the more.<\/p>\n<p>Leaving Electronic Devices on Uses Less Energy than Turning Them Off, and Also Adds to Their Life<\/p>\n<p>This statement was true back in the 1990s. However, technology has advanced to the point where this really has no merit anymore.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s always a good thing when you choose to save energy.
