Vacation season is coming up.<\/p>\n

While you deserve some rest and a break, don\u2019t take a vacation from saving energy!<\/p>\n

It may take a lot of work to get ready for your vacation.<\/p>\n

But, it doesn\u2019t take a lot of work to prep your home for saving energy while you\u2019re gone.<\/p>\n

Check out what to focus on:<\/p>\n

1. Use Your Smart Thermostat<\/strong><\/p>\n

You can set your smart thermostat to vacation mode.<\/p>\n

This new schedule simply overrides your regular schedule.<\/p>\n

And if you forget, just quickly set the temperature with your app.<\/p>\n

85 degrees is about the ideal during summer. You can add another degree or two (each degree increases your efficiency by 2-3%).<\/p>\n

Just don\u2019t set the temperature above 90 degrees. That makes your fridge work really hard.<\/p>\n

And if you\u2019re going away during the winter, keep your home at 50 – 55 degrees. That\u2019s still plenty warm enough to keep your pipes from freezing, should it get brutally cold out.<\/p>\n

Then just pop the temperature back to normal several hours before you return home so everything\u2019s nice and comfy again.<\/p>\n

2. Turn It All Off<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ceiling fans, lights, appliances, electronics, smart power strips, pool or spa pumps\u2026either put them on a schedule to reduce running time or turn them off completely.<\/p>\n

You may need to set a schedule\u2026such as turning on your lights to make would-be crooks think someone\u2019s at home.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s fine. You have to account for safety too.<\/p>\n

But, turn off as much as you can to optimize your savings.<\/p>\n

3. Put Down Your Blinds and Shades<\/strong><\/p>\n

The sun is your number one energy savings enemy during the summer.<\/p>\n

Spend some time in it and enjoy it.<\/p>\n

But, don\u2019t let it heat your home any more than it has to.<\/p>\n

Put down your blinds, shades, or curtains so it can\u2019t heat your home any more than necessary.<\/p>\n

4. Keep Your Fridge Full <\/strong><\/p>\n

Wait a minute! What?<\/p>\n

Why on earth would you fill your fridge?<\/p>\n

Well, your fridge is actually more energy efficient when full than empty.<\/p>\n

Simply fill any empty space with jugs of water.<\/p>\n

5. Don\u2019t Forget Your Water Heater<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re leaving home just for a couple days, you can leave your water heater on.<\/p>\n

However, if you\u2019re going away for longer than that, you will benefit from turning it off.<\/p>\n

Just turn it off at your circuit breaker.<\/p>\n

Honestly, that\u2019s about all you need to watch for.<\/p>\n

Setting your home up for energy efficiency while you\u2019re on vacation is not a large, or difficult project.<\/p>\n
