What a grand time of year!<\/p>\n<p>Toss on a sweater or just sit around in your shorts all day, and you\u2019re still comfortable.<\/p>\n<p>It just doesn\u2019t get any better than that, does it?<\/p>\n<p>But, if you want to keep your electricity use to the minimum you need to still be comfortable, you still have things you can do.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a quick summary:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do DIY AC maintenance<\/li>\n<li>Make your ceiling fans go the right direction<\/li>\n<li>Cook outside<\/li>\n<li>Upgrade your blinds<\/li>\n<li>Seal your ducts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And here\u2019s the full story for each:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Service Your AC<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Keeping things in tip-top condition gives you the best efficiency. Use Your Ceiling Fans<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The wicked Texas heat can come at any time. And if you really don\u2019t want to turn on your AC, you can still get away without it&#8230;at least until the temps get really crazy.<\/p>\n<p>Your ceiling fan should have a switch on it. Flipping that switch changes the direction the fan blades turn.<\/p>\n<p>During summer, make sure your ceiling fan turns counterclockwise. This pushes air down and makes you feel cool.<\/p>\n<p>Then, you can keep your AC system off entirely or at a higher temperature. And that\u2019s where the savings happen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Grill Out<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re not already sick of being inside all the time because of COVID, you might be come spring.<\/p>\n<p>So, use that time as an opportunity to cook outside. Keeping that cooking heat outdoors means your home stays a little cooler.<\/p>\n<p>And you get to have fun while staying a little cooler!<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Consider Upgrading Your Blinds<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Do your window treatments keep the hot sun out of your home?<\/p>\n<p>If they\u2019re not as effective as you\u2019d like, now\u2019s your last chance to install blinds before the intense heat arrives.<\/p>\n<p>Plenty of websites custom-make blinds to your specs and offer free shipping and free returns.<\/p>\n<p>So, it\u2019s relatively easy to do.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Inspect and Seal Ducts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Make sure you use tape specifically designed for your AC system\u2019s ductwork. Don\u2019t use plain ol\u2019 duct tape.<\/p>\n<p>Finding duct leaks isn\u2019t super hard. Wet your hand and run it a few inches away from your ducts on all sides. Or, light an incense stick and look for the smoke to suddenly blow around when running your AC system.<\/p>\n<p>Then, seal the cracks.<\/p>\n<p>Saving money on electricity during the spring isn\u2019t hard.
