Costs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Electric heaters cost a lot less to install. They don\u2019t require a flue or any outside ventilation.<\/p>\n<p>But, they usually cost more over the long run. That\u2019s because electricity doesn\u2019t produce heat nearly as efficiently as gas.<\/p>\n<p>Gas heaters, on the other hand, cost more to install. There\u2019s two types:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Flued (requires outside ventilation)<\/li>\n<li>Non-flued (doesn\u2019t need outside ventilation)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s installing the necessary ventilation that costs more. But, gas heaters generally cost less over the long-term because gas heats more efficiently then electricity.<\/p>\n<p>However, this is somewhat reduced by the shorter life of gas heaters. They may only last 50 &#8211; 66% of the total lifespan of an electric heater.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Noise and General Disruption <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Electric heaters are generally quieter and less disruptive than gas heaters. It\u2019s because they have a simpler design that doesn\u2019t require a flue, vent or burner.<\/p>\n<p>Electric heaters also don\u2019t release carbon monoxide. That makes them safer to have in your home. You don\u2019t have to worry about breathing in noxious fumes.<\/p>\n<p>Gas heaters still are pretty safe. But they do have the chance of leaking gas, which you need to address immediately. And they can leak carbon monoxide into your home.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Maintenance <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Electric heaters require practically no maintenance at all. And the minimal amount of maintenance that needs to be done, you can do yourself.<\/p>\n<p>Gas heaters, on the other hand, need some care and attention. Otherwise, you risk leaking gas or carbon monoxide into your home. You might even have a professional do an annual tune-up with your gas heater.<\/p>\n<p>Maintenance includes changing the filter, ensuring proper operation of the thermostat, cleaning the blower, cleaning the ducts, cleaning the vents, and inspecting the fan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Heating speed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gas heats faster. Typically, people who live further north in colder areas of the US have gas furnaces for this reason.<\/p>\n<p>Electricity has a hard time keeping up with gas in brutally cold temperatures.
