It can be hard with certain family members. You may have long standing friction in your relationships that makes getting everyone on the same page difficult. <\/p>\n

But ultimately, you\u2019ve learned many methods for turning those challenging situations into positive ones. <\/p>\n

Like anything, however, there are things you should never do under any circumstances. <\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what to avoid so you don\u2019t turn your family off from energy savings: <\/p>\n

1. Make Yourself the Only Decision Maker<\/strong><\/p>\n

No one likes it when rules come down from on high from a single decision maker. <\/p>\n

Do you? <\/p>\n

Remember past cases where your boss, parents, or any other authority figure always had the,\u201dMy way or the highway,\u201d attitude. <\/p>\n

No one really likes to be around that, including you. <\/p>\n

Yes. You may know the best way to do things. <\/p>\n

But if you want everyone in your family to participate with energy savings, you\u2019re much more likely to get that participation if you involve everyone in decision making. <\/p>\n

2. Don\u2019t Preach and Make Everything Negative<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is what most humans in authority positions seem to do by default. You can probably remember at least one, and perhaps many more, authority figures who turned every situation into a negative. <\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t do this!\u201d \u201cNot like that!\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re wrong!\u201d<\/p>\n

And then absolutely no praise is heard when things have been done right. <\/p>\n

Do you see how that turns anything into a negative situation? <\/p>\n

It arouses everyone\u2019s anxiety and disdain because they know all they\u2019ll ever hear is what they did wrong. <\/p>\n

Instead, lead with a carrot. Reward others in your family with your gratitude and praise when energy savings has been done correctly. <\/p>\n

Ignore the small wrong stuff. And selectively point out the majorly wrong stuff, along with saying,\u201dYou\u2019ll save more energy, and I\u2019ll be much happier, when you turn the lights off every time.\u201d <\/p>\n

Focus on rewarding the behavior you want rather than chastising the behavior you don\u2019t want. <\/p>\n

3. Don\u2019t be a Hypocrite <\/strong><\/p>\n

There\u2019s no worse way to undermine your family\u2019s belief in energy savings than by being a hypocrite. <\/p>\n

Of course, you\u2019ll never be perfect. <\/p>\n

You might find yourself doing things that you\u2019ve asked your family to not do many times. <\/p>\n

That\u2019s okay! <\/p>\n

The problem comes in if you keep doing those things, don\u2019t admit where you\u2019re wrong, and make no real effort to change. <\/p>\n

So if you have a family member who catches you in less-than-ideal energy savings behavior, simply admit you\u2019re wrong and that you\u2019ll do everything you can to improve going forward. <\/p>\n

…And then follow through and make it happen! <\/p>\n

Leading your family into more energy savings isn\u2019t necessarily easy. But if you can avoid these 3 mistakes, you\u2019ll experience much less resistance to it. <\/p>\n
