Maybe energy savings and helping out the environment falls to the bottom of the list of their concerns. <\/p>\n
Here\u2019s how you might make the change process easier (and more likely): <\/p>\n
1. Reward the Behavior You Want to See <\/strong><\/p>\n Psychological studies have consistently found and proven that providing a positive reward is the most effective way to shape desirable behavior. <\/p>\n But, don\u2019t just guess or assign the reward if it\u2019s a family member you\u2019re thinking about. Ask them what reward they want for meeting certain energy savings goals. <\/p>\n And do the same for yourself. For example, go out for a massage if you meet your energy savings goals for the month. <\/p>\n Or, maybe that\u2019s too long. Perhaps, treat yourself to a cup of coffee if you meet your daily energy savings goal. <\/p>\n 2. Create a Family Competition <\/strong><\/p>\n Some people thrive on competition and the thrill of winning or losing. You could create a family competition that results in the winner choosing the family activity on the weekend. <\/p>\n Did you see how you snuck in a reward there too? <\/p>\n 3. Focus on a Pain <\/strong><\/p>\n Let\u2019s say you have a family member who constantly says you \u201cnever get to go to the mall.\u201d <\/p>\n Well, turn that into an opportunity for energy savings. <\/p>\n Tell them they get to go to the mall if your family saves $50 on your next energy bill. <\/p>\n And then challenge them to come up with ways to make that happen. <\/p>\n When your family member sees they can relieve a pain by taking certain action, they\u2019re more likely to act. <\/p>\n
